Internship at the Consulate General of Canada in Detroit

The Consulate General of Canada in Detroit is looking for an MSU undergraduate intern for a hybrid internship from December 1, 2024, through May 31, 2025. The intern will be expected to work 20-25 hours per week and will report to Jan Scazighino, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner at the Detroit Consulate.

Scope of Work:

  1. Research and analysis of business outcall targets: one of the primary objectives of the Consulate is to attract US investment into Canada. We do this by meeting with local US companies, listening to their plans for expansion, and then proposing in-Canada sites for their consideration; before all that happens, we need to know as much as possible about the target companies. As such, the student will help to gather information about the company (financials, media, social media, general background), the company representatives we meet (from their online bios, their social media), and our own client relationship management system.
  2. Social media: In collaboration with Consulate program managers (Jan Scazighino/Trade, Steve Neves/Political, Colin Bird/Consul General), the student will work to create and post content on social media to promote the Canada-US relationship.
  3. Political analysis: under the guidance of Political program manager Steve Neves, the student will help his team research, gather, analyse and write political reports following the US elections.
  4. Vetting service providers: the student will assist the Consulate business section to compile a list of trustworthy additional professional service providers, such as: local law firms, custom brokers, debt collectors, tax consultants.
  5. Logistics: the student will assist the Consulate team with large-scale projects (for example: Canada’s presence at the Detroit Battery Show) and high-profile visits (Ministers, Ambassadors, etc). This could include help setting up transport, hotels, media, scheduling, briefing notes, receptions, etc.

There is a small monthly stipend available to offset travel costs for selected candidates.

How to Apply:

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis with a final due date of September 20, 2024. Please send a cover letter, recent CV, and contact information for two references to: Dr. Rebecca Malouin, Director, Canadian Studies Center, at malouinr(at)msu.edu

Select applicants will be interviewed by Dr. Malouin and then by Jan Scazighino, Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner, Consulate General of Canada.
