Ireland turns passion for horses into lifelong career
I have always wondered how I could turn my passion for horses into a career, but I never had the opportunity to explore the numerous career opportunities related to the equine industry. As the plane touched down at the Dublin Airport, I could hardly contain my excitement. Since this was my first time traveling internationally, it felt unbelievable to be standing in another country. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to travel to Ireland, especially for the purpose of studying the equine industry, which is something that I am extremely passionate about. As an Animal Science major and an avid horse lover, I have dedicated much of my studies to learning about horse management, health, nutrition, and reproduction. I have always wondered how I could turn my passion for horses into a career, but I never had the opportunity to explore the numerous career opportunities related to the equine industry. The “Exploring Irish Horse Industries” Program was the perfect opportunity for me to learn how horses provide a wide variety jobs and services.
In just two short weeks, we covered a lot of ground in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and we saw some breathtaking views! Since I have never been outside of the United States before, I found it to be an extremely eye-opening experience to step into the Irish culture and learn about their customs and way of life. It was incredible to learn about the rich history of Ireland and see castles and monuments that were built thousands of years ago! One of my favorite historic sites that we visited was Dun Aonghasa on the Aran Islands, which was a stone fort built on the edge of a 100-meter cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Along with learning about the deep history and rich culture of Ireland, we studied the extensive equine industry in Ireland! After we visited our first horse farm in Ireland, it became very clear that Irish horse owners were very proud of their Connemara Ponies. I learned that Connemara Ponies are native to Ireland and are known for their gentle attitudes, strong work ethic, and comfortable gait. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to ride a Connemara Pony on our last trek (trail ride) through the Ballyhoura Mountains, and it was incredible. Galloping through the mountains in Ireland on a Connemara Pony was one of the most freeing experiences that I have ever felt, and it truly encapsulated the Irish horse industry.
I enjoyed each of the horse races, stud farms, equine rehabilitation centers, therapeutic riding centers, and equestrian trekking centers that we visited. One activity in particular really stood out to me which was the Connemara Therapeutic Riding Center. As I listened to Bartley (manager) and Jackie (Coach) talk about their work with children that had additional needs, I realized that horses are so much more than just a companion or sport animal. Horses can have such a positive impact on so many people and they can truly change someone’s life. It was extremely inspiring to see the passion that Bartley and Jackie had for the work that they do, and it is my hope that one day I will be as passionate as they are about the career that I am in.
I am extremely thankful for having the opportunity to be involved in this incredible study abroad program. As a young adult, I think it is very important to step out of your comfort zone and expand your worldview. Traveling to Ireland was a big step outside of my comfort zone, but as a result I feel that I have gained a new sense of independence and have taken my first step as a global citizen. By exposing myself to a new culture and talking with people with diverse opinions, I have gained a whole new perspective on life. This program has had a crucial role in my personal and professional development, and it has taught me how to turn my passion for horses into a lifelong career.
