Katie treking atop a mountain in IndiaI had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Ecology of the Mountains study abroad program in India. I can confidently say that it was a life-changing experience. From the breathtaking landscapes to the cultural immersion, this program was one that I will never forget.

First, part of the program is spent trekking through the Himalaya in the Kumaon Hills of India. The trekking itself was a challenge that pushed me both physically and mentally, but the rewards were well worth it. Towering snow-capped peaks, lush green valleys, pristine rivers, and the picturesque villages we encountered along the way left me in awe. Due to being completely off the grid and surrounded by all this natural beauty, I felt so connected to nature and the world around me in a way I Setting up tents with himalayas in backgroundhad never experienced before. Not many people in my generation get a chance to completely unplug for a month, nor get to form a community full of camaraderie without any technology involved. I learned how important it is to connect with those around you and how to simply “be.” We are so glued to our phones that we miss the opportunities and people around us, and this study abroad showed me how much better life is when you disconnect from technology and re-connect to the real world. I also gained a new appreciation for the simple things in life like running water and flush toilets. However, I learned the value of pushing my limits and step out of my comfort zone, and as a result, I returned home with increased confidence and a more open mind. After all, if I can survive a month of leeches, monsoon rains, and pit toilets, what can’t I handle?

Sharing chai with locals, listening to the crew’s stories in the kitchen, and learning traditional songs and dances were unforgettable highlights. The joy and laughter that filled the air was infectious, and I found myself fully immersed in the moment. I realized this program wasn’t just about exploring the stunning landscapes; it was about connecting with the people who call this amazing region home. Through these interactions, I developed a profound respect for their way of life and a deeper appreciation for the rich culture that makes up the Indian Himalaya. I will never forget this program, nor the lessons I learned and people I met.
