This program was a great opportunity for me to really see more of the world, and see how a city like London differs from other cities in the U.S., like Chicago, New York, Detroit, etc. I really enjoyed London, and thought it was an easy city to live in, and get around in. Thanks to the unlimited Oyster cards we were able to get from the program, our travel throughout the city was not limited, and we were able to experience all sides of the city. From the upper-class areas of West London to the middle-class areas we stayed in, there was so much to see and experience. The cramped alleyways, the beautiful graffiti, and of course the corner pubs that smelled of beer, and rang out in cheers during the footy (soccer).
In terms of academics, I felt that this was a great program for film students, and those interested in film. Being able to work in groups, and in a different environment, really made it feel like we were part of a real crew (which we technically were I guess). The ability to also use the BFI screening facilities was amazing. They were like mini movie theaters, and really served the purpose we needed, when screening films, and watching the works of our guest lecturers. The guest lecturers, who were great speakers, really gave us insight into the film industry in London, and just in general. So, I have to say, thanks to Professor Pillai, those were some of the best days of class we had.
Outside of class, being able to go to places like the Wicked show, Oxford, the Harry Potter Studio Tour, and on our own time, the Seven Sister Cliffs and Amsterdam, were some of the best experiences. They all proved to be beautiful places, and informative places as well. My favorite part was the Harry Potter Tour, which was so nostalgic, and made me feel like a kid again, and reminded me of why I wanted to get into film in the first place.
