Steve Hanson is the 2026 recipient for the Dean’s Global Impact Award, which was introduced in 2022 to recognize staff who played a critical role in the evacuation of MSU-affiliated scholars and families from Afghanistan as the Taliban took control in August 2021. The award recognizes extraordinary Spartans for singular actions that have a direct and positive impact on members of MSU’s global community.

Hanson’s career at Michigan State University spans 37 years, including more than a decade as vice provost and dean for International Studies and Programs. He retired from his position as vice provost and dean last year and has maintained an active presence in International Studies and Programs as vice provost and dean emeritus.
Titus Awokuse, vice provost and dean of International Studies and Programs, nominated Hanson for the award because of Hanson’s vision for sustaining global partnerships.
Awokuse explained, “Steve saw the changing landscape of global higher education and responded by evolving MSU’s approach to international engagement.”
Hanson’s vision led to the creation of the Alliance for African Partnership, or AAP, the first of the “partnership platforms.” AAP’s success led to other platforms such as Asia Hub and Canada Connect.
“This was more than an administrative innovation. It was a strategic shift that helped MSU engage with the world in a more intentional, collaborative and impactful way,” Awokuse said.
